Getting your hands dirty

Ready to apply? Here’s what you need to know.

Trim, spread, and sweep

If your grass is past your ankles, give it a trim. Then use a spreader to apply fertilizer or seed to your lawn. Last, sweep away excess product.

Don't forget to water

Gently water your lawn until it looks dewy, but don’t go overboard.

Reseeding in the spring

If you’re reseeding, apply grass seed after fertilizer but before watering.

Questions, answered

We love this question. Seriously, we love to talk about our natural ingredients because they work so hard to make your lawn beautiful. (It doesn't hurt that all the ingredients are easy to pronounce, either.) In our Happy Lawn fertilizer we use feather meal for long-lasting feeding and blood meal for a quick boost of nutrients. Molasses feeds soil microbes to build fertility, and flour meal is great for amending the soil. Kelp meal encourages strong root development, and potassium helps the lawn stand up to stress as well as you do. And ingredients like alfalfa meal, soybean meal, and earthworm castings all help amend and condition the soil. If you want to see the the full ingredient list, click on the Ingredients section in the accordion menu above. Want to know what's in instead Ambitious Seed products? Just cool season grasses designed to thrive in your yard. When we talk about ingredients, we're not just talking about what you put in your yard, but what we add to the planet. That's why our packaging materials matter too. Our bags include green plastics — 25% of the film comes from sugarcane, a bio-based renewable source. All our corrugate can be recycled in local collection boxes. Find the locations near you.

We'll be honest, the plan is part of the beauty. It's what makes instead so simple. You purchase it once in the spring and we send you exactly what you need, when you need it, the rest of the year. But, hey, what if it's summertime and we've just bumped into each other for the first time? We've got smaller plans for later in the growing season, so you're only buying what your lawn needs for the rest of the year — and we'll still ship it right when it's time to apply.

We're excited for your order, too, so once you place it, we'll send you emails with status updates. If your inbox isn't a very hospitable environment, go ahead and contact us directly.

Watering Tips
It's important to water daily until the seedlings start to grow!

You may need to water more than once a day to keep the soil moist (but not soggy), especially if the weather is hot, dry, or windy. If your grass seed dries out after it has started to sprout, it will die! As your grass grows and develops stronger roots, you should be able to water more deeply (more water) with reduced frequency (less often) as needed.
